Hi need some help re. history of service Alfred Marsh service no 8341, which battalion ??
-
1st Volunteer Battalion The Manchester Regiment.
regards
-
thanks, can you confirm when the battalion returned to UK, and medal entitlement.
-
They left S. Africa on 21.5.1902.
As with all Manchetser Regiment VSC's his entitlement was the QSA only.
His clasps were Cape Colony, Orange Free State, S. Africa 1901, S. Africa 1902.
Do you have his medal?
regards
-
thanks - yes have the medal, need to check clasps but 1 seems to be missing, also citation. away for framing.
-
is it possible to download army service records?
-
I have found that virtually all the VSC mens records survive and can be downloaded by subscription to Findmypast.co.uk, which if you dont have it is available in most local libraries.

Hi
Would you like to post the photo in the photo are of the site.
Cheers Roy
-
yes please to place in photo section

I did find his Short Service Attestation form held in WO 97 at National Archives Kew via Findmypast. Appears he joined up in 14th Feb 1901
-
did the Manchesters form part of Queen Victoria funeral processions? family always spoke of grandfather being in this
-
Possibly, but if they did they would be Regular Soldiers and not local Volunteers like your relative.
Likely the event was one that took place local to him.

This is one of the pages from the medal roll of the Manch Regt Volunteers with a Pte A March as part of the 3rd Active Service Section Manch Regt.
There is lots of information on the Manch Regt roll in the Boer War on this part of the site.
