Title: great grandfather military record.

Hi wonder if anyone can help?  an ancestor of mine enlisted on18 August 1881, Would he have joined voluntarily? or was it compulsary?  thanks .

hiya george.
any enlistments in any arm of service,before WW1 would be voluntary
