Title: Manchester Pal - Street Flowers Salesman - KIA 01.07.16
Post by: City-Pal on April 27, 2021, 07:04:37 PM
On the street corners of Manchester there was once a chirpy, cheeky chap - Sam Fordesman from Harpurhey knew how to cheer people up with his banter and good humour. He sold flowers to city workers to give to their loved ones. In 1914 Sam joined the Pals of the 21st Battalion (6th City) - He was killed-in-action at Mametz on the first day of the battle of the Somme, leaving his wife and children to grieve his awful, tragic loss. No flowers adorn Sam's grave, for he doesn't have one, his body was never found. Sam, the jovial street hawker is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Next time you buy a bunch of flowers, think of Sam.
