40757 L Cpl Albert Edward Barton
« on: November 25, 2010, 09:49:16 AM »
I am looking for more information about my great uncle.  His obituary reads: "Barton, Albert Edward, cadet 22nd Manchester Regiment.  Drowned at Hoylake 14 June 1917 while a cadet waiting to be gazetted as an officer.  Age 20.  Served in France".  He is not the same soldier who was born in Manchester, about whom several postings have already been made.

He is buried in Holy Trinity churchyard, Trinity Road, Hoylake, Wirral.  There is a family memorial which has rather been supplanted by a new regimental gravestone.  I am unaware of any closer relatives than myself, so I would be very interested to find out who was consulted about the erection of this new memorial.  The grave was clearly tended on Remembrance Sunday, so someone must know something!

Please get in touch if you have any information about this soldier.  Thank you very much.

hiya phil.
when L/cpl barton died, his family would have been asked if they wanted a CWGC headstone, someone at the time, gave their permission because hes listed in the original CWGC register as having a war grave,he then comes under the care of the CWGC and they are responsible for the care+maintainance of his grave, his original headstone may have been damaged or weathered and needed replacing, they would also tidy his grave after they erected a new stone.
if you contact the CWGC,they will tell you when the headstone was replaced.

with regards to permission, only those family members who agreed to his original headstone, can be consulted,if they are no longer living, then the CWGC go ahead and replace it

Thanks for this information.  The original memorial stone is still in place and in pretty good condition, which is what prompted my inquiry.  Having one stone placed directly in front of another looks quite odd.  I will contact CWGC to ask if the two headstones could be more sympathetically arranged.
