Title: 44511 Pte. Percy North - 22nd Bn. Manchester Regiment
Post by: 1954gladiator on August 02, 2009, 02:18:34 PM
Percy was another reinforcement with my grandad 44510 A.Cpl Stanley Vince. He was KIA on 14.10.1917 aged 21.  Does anyone know where or have more info please.

Can someone post his MIC?

Thanks.

Thanks Chris - the next enlister after my grandfather although not a Royal Fusilier before becoming a Manchester!  Although in the 22nd Bn. when he was KIA unlike the other 3 who were in the 20th Bn.

The memorial scrolls you have kindly posted for all 4 reinforcements who were with my grandfather give theatres of war as Flanders & France.  Do you have any means of finding out which battles each was killed in - although on different dates in 1917?  If so, can you please post.  I just would like to get a feeling of where my grandfather might have seen action in 1917 - so far the only place is at Bullecourt in April/May 1917.  I know I could probably find this info in the war diaries of both Bn's at the NA at Kew or in Bn. transcripts at the Ashton under Lyne Reference Library but it is not the simplest thing to do when you live so far away from each site.  Is there already a cronological list of battle honours for each the 20th & 22nd Bn.s somewhere & if so can you post or tell me where to find please?  If not, maybe it is something for someone to do for posting with Bn. info on the forum?!  If only I had the time!!   :)

Hi Migky

Thanks for the Medal Cards for Percy North & my grandad, Stanley Vince.

May I ask you to share information about where to find these easily please?  Whenever, new topics are placed on the forum someone always seems to be able to post the appropriate Medal Card immediately.  Before joining the forum I had to go through the NA at Kew & pay to download a pdf file of a whole page containing my grandads medal card along with 5 other Vinces, not related. The page wasn't in colour either & not so legible!

Anyway, can you please help me more by posting Medal Cards for the following if you can do so easily please?

44508 Pte. James R Wheeler - 20th Bn.
44514 L-Cpl Hugh Frederick Eva - 20th Bn
44517 Pte John Cregg - 20th Bn

Thanks.

Clive

Hi mack

Thanks for your message - the only info I've been able to find is the fact that these 4 reinforcements with my grandad when they first became Manchesters in 1916 & that they were all KIA at different times in 1917 & are commemorated on the CWWG site 'debt of honour'.  Harribobs has found Wheeler & Eva commemorated on another site & posted their memorial scrolls.

What I would like to find out is info relating to the 9 other reinforcements in the batch with my grandad.  I assume they all survived & if this is so they would have medal cards that would show this & maybe more info about their theatres of war.  I was hoping that the forum contributors could post medal cards for these 9.  :)

Hi Jane

As you will see below Mack advised that my grandfather, Stanley Vince, was in this batch of 14 reinforcements:

44500 stanley nichols
44502 walter,j johnson
44505 alfred hack
44506 levi sherratt
44507 harry,j,j whitehead
44508 james,r wheeler
44509 george,s pearce
44510 STANLEY VINCE
44511 percy north
44512 patrick,joseph murphy
44513 john,e stageman
44514 hugh,frederick eva
44516 harold,frederick castle
44517 john cregg

Some of these men, came from the Royal Fusiliers Depot, they were mostly London lads.

They were posted to the 24th Infantry Brigade at Etaples,on 29-6-16,then on 9th July 1916, they were attatched to the Manchesters and joined the 20th battalion, in the field, on 25th Oct 1916.

Grateful for any new info you can uncover on the 9 who I hope survived WW1 along with my grandfather.  :)

Searching with the numbers alone, the only one showing up pension records on ancestry is Harold Frederick Castle there's 38 pages, do you have access to ancestry? If not I can send copies to you. Ancestry are only up to the initial N, so some of the names can't be found yet anyway.

Hi Jane

Thanks so much - fascinating to see all the Medal Cards that detail the various regiments the 9 were in before becoming Manchesters & that 2 were promoted to Cpl. These MC's also seem to indicate that all 9 survived the war but 2 were discharged early in 1919 so perhaps they were wounded or suffering ill health & invallided out like my grandfather?

3 of the 9 (2 were Royal Fusiliers like my grandfather) were awarded a 1915 Star Medal for service in France in 1915.  Presumably they must have been sent home & then volunteered to fight again in 1916?  What heroism!

Stageman's Medal Card mentions  'Silver Badge List H/19/1' - do you or does anyone else know what this is please?

No need to send me Ancestry copies of Pension for Castle - I can access for myself if needs be.  You are 'Star'  ;) as I can now persue my own research more dilligently & will add any interesting discoveries as they may unfold.

Clive  :)
