Two Harry Gibsons in the 9th Bn?
« on: October 19, 2007, 10:01:38 AM »
I am looking for information about my great uncles, Harry (b. 1889) and Walter (b. 1884) Gibson, originally from the Blackburn/Bolton area, but I don't know where they went when their father re-married and moved to Yorkshire.

The CWG have a slot on the Helles Memorial for L/Cpl 2075 Harry Gibson, 25 yo, d. 19/6/1915, which looks like him.  His medal card gives his rank as Pte, and says he went missing on that date.  Two spaces above is a card for a Cpl 508 Harry Gibson, also missing on that date, but without a memorial.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?  I guess that it's perfectly possible for there to be two Harry Gibsons, with both being reported missing after a night patrol, but the corporal making it back to our lines later on, but it would be nice to know.

Can anyone enlighten me about how to get enlistment records for soldiers who were killed, rather than pension records on ancestry.com?

Does his service number indicate that Harry 2075 was a TF soldier pre-war?

Hi Angular and a Warm Welcome to The Forum  ;D

There are two different chaps called Harry Gibson

508 was a Corporal born St Michael's, Ashton

2075 was a L/Cpl born Bardsley.

I will reply regarding Walter on the other topic you have just started.

According to Soldiers who Died in the Great War database there is only one Gibson born Blackburn:

GIBSON, JAMES
Rank:    Private
2nd Bn. West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own)
Date of Death:    25/10/1916
Service No:    40068
Casualty Type:    Commonwealth War Dead
Memorial Reference:    Pier and Face 2 A 2 C and 2 D.   THIEPVAL MEMORIAL

This is not conclusive as some men do not have a place of birth listed  I just thought you maybe interested in the information, and of course your Gibsons may have survived the war.

Thanks Wendi.  L/Cpl Gibson is not 'mine' after all, the parent's names are wrong.  Cpl Gibson was born in the wrong place, and the age is wrong; the 1901 and 1891 census data I have shows Blackburn as a birthplace. Don't know why Cpl. Gibson's name didn't come up when I did my CWG search.  Ho hum.

If you're interested for future purposes, L/Cpl Gibson was living at 372 Oldham Rd, Ashton in 1891, moving to 1, Argyle St. by 1901.  Cpl Gibson appears to be living with parents Roland and Charlotte at 62 Stockport Road in 1891; can't find him in 1901.

Hi Angular !

Thanks for the additional info, I'm sure Mack will use it !  If Cpl Gibson was a career soldier he could be in South Africa in 1901

There was also a Henry Gibson, L/Cpl 27128, in the 16th Bn, and another H Gibson, Pte 37650, in the 21st Bn, according to the CWG.  I thought the Welsh regiments were bad!

Thanks again.

I have found a medal card for a Harry Gibson in the Manchester Regiment, but no battalion number.  His regimental number is 57581.

Does anyone know what Battalion he was in, or perhaps where he enlisted?
He was entiteled to the British Medal and the Victory Medal.

Pencilled notes on the card appear to say 'V. hudal Retd F.V.S. 332/33  d/20/7/33 new/5/37816'  none of which (apart from the pssible date of death) make any sense to me.

Thanks for any help!
