Title: Pte H Ackroyd 2034 Manchester Regiment
Post by: topcat68 on January 14, 2008, 12:51:49 PM
Would it be possible for some advice in trying to find out which Btn the above served in?.I have looked through some of the archives in Ashton Library to no avail :-[

Your expertise would be most welcome.

By the way the above named person is my wife's Great Grandad who survived the war,we have his medals here at home and I would like to do some detailed research on him if at all possible, but I don't know how to go about finding which Battalion he served with.

Hi TC

and welcome to the group

i think the first thing to do is to download his medal index card, it is available here and will cost you £3.50 :-

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=1769480&queryType=1&resultcount=1 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=1769480&queryType=1&resultcount=1)

we should be able to ascertain his battalion from that and hopefully get some more information

cheers

chris

Right mate managed to download the MIC,very few details to be honest it states that he is entitled to the,BWM,VM AND 1915 STAR,it also says that the theatre of war first served in is 1 2 H ??? and the date of entry into that theatre is 5.5.15.

It doesn't mention which Battalion he served in though, would any members be able to shed any light given the details above?.Mnay thanks in advance.Julian

sorry Julian, that was my guess before i saw the card ;D

here it is

with that number, he is either a regular or a territorial, looking at the date of entry, he's a territorial

the theatre of war 12H is actually 2b in brackets, gallipoli

according to my records the only battalion to arrive at gallipoli actually on the 5/5/15 was the 9th battalion (hence my guess) but they all arrived around that time. we now have to check the medal rolls to be certain, so you'll have to bear with us for the moment

hiya TC.
i think chris is right,hes a territorial.
all the terriers were renumbered in 1917,with a six digit number, harry hasnt got one, which suggests he was invalided out of the army as medically unfit before 1917.
these ackroyds are the only servicemen listed in oldham[c1918]
ernest.56 herbert st,waterhead.
john.13 gartside st,clarksfield.
joseph.18 morley st,waterhead.
thomas.54 norbury st.clarksfield.
mack
ps,he was probably in the 1/10[oldham]battalion.

If you go to www.jadepublishing.com Amateur soldiers, by k w mitchinson, a history of oldhams volunteers and territorials 1859-1938. price £16.95 code 0-9518098-9-x, it's says it's being re-published.
Hope this helps. Also www.oldham.gov.uk have it listed and they do sell books this may be a longshot.

Hiya... Harry Ackroyd was my great grandfather TOO!! Are you Lyndas husband Phil? I have Harrys membership card from the Oldham Sailors & Soldiers Club showing the address 117 Honeywell Lane. I already have the copy of the medal roll and I have a picture of him with his comrades which I guess from reading all the previous info here that it was taken at Gallipoli.I have all the info on Lilly Burslem too from researching the Addison family history. What a find!

also just to add a bit of info... Seth Broadbent who witnessed Lilly & Harrys marriage was Lillys half brother (her mother Caroline had been married before and was a widow with children when she married Lillys father John William Burslem) Harry & Lillys daughter Florence (my maternal grandmother) was born on 8.12 1910 not 18th.

the membership card I have shows him as belonging to the 1/10 manchester regiment. I seem to remember a family story that he was "gassed" in the war?? Is it possible to confirm that in any way? Thanks Jenny
