200036 C/Sgt (CQMS) Francis Morgan Taylor
« on: February 13, 2009, 04:24:43 PM »
Hello everyone, I am new to the forum.

I am researching my grandfather, 200036 C/Sgt (CQMS) Francis Morgan Taylor 'B' Coy 1/5 Manchesters. I know quite a bit about his service as I have one of his paybooks in my possession. It covers the period Oct 1915 to Sept 1917 so luckily covers Egypt, the Dardanelles and the Western Front.

The first entry is 4 Oct 1915 where he was paid £1.10s at Mustapha, on 14 May 1917 he was paid 300 Francs in the Field in France and given 1 months leave in the UK. On 6 June 1917 he was paid £5
re-engagement bounty at Depot Wigan.

I would like to know more about the Manchesters and the campaigns he fought in, where is the best place to start and is the Manchesters Museum worth a visit.

Cheers

GT

Kingo,

Are you able to post the MIC at a bigger size? My eyes won't squint any closer!

Cheers,

Dave

Hi GT

On the MIC It says he entered  on the 06/05/15 thearter of war was 2b the Balkans and had the 15star, also it says that he had a silver war badge. This was issued to soldiers that had been wounded and where no longer fit for active service.
It says Frank and original number was 439.

I think I'm right in saying that the 5th Bn where raised in Wigan, we have some photos of the soldiers in the drill hall, I'll see if I can find them.

Thanks mate!

It appears that Frank was a pre-war territorial and was then disembodied from Service on 24/1/1919.

I think the SWB list says H/207/1 so we may be able to look that up to see what illness/injury caused his discharge.

Cheers,

Dave

It explaines a bit more about the SWB on this link.

http://themanchesters.org/forum/index.php?topic=1839.0

It was issued for sickness and old age as well as being wounded.

Thanks, you guys are brilliant. In answer to some points, he was a pre-war Territorial. He enlisted aged 16 in April 1908 in 'B' Coy which was indeed based at Wigan. Thats definitely the right MIC as it has his old number of 439 on his paybook.

It comes as a surprise that he was given the SWB, nobody has ever mentioned that he was wounded. Is it possible to find out any more on that. Also I have an official photo at an Ex-Servicemens Rememberance Day Parade in 1932 and he has MSM behind his name. I presumed he had been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal but that is not on the MIC.

Cheers
