Timberman,

Thanks for this info.  Some of the names are already on the "Transfers" thread, but others are new to me, so I will see if anything turns up at this end.  Take care.  Philip.

Lt Wilfred,rhodes freeman
hes already mentioned in this thread

MC.for gallantry and ability and very valuable work performed,he located the position of german batteries on 10th march 1915 and conveyed the info by wireless messages from his aeroplane to our artillery and although his propeller and plane were pierced by bullets,he remained in the air for five hours.

gazetted 27-3-18

the MC wasn't instituted till 1916,but this award was already gazetted in march 1915,AND it was a quick one,it was awarded 17 days after his act[10th march]

David Denison,

On the 24th January 1917, over the Western Front, a 2nd Lt. A. Denison was airborne in a FE8 aircraft No. 6453 of No. 41 Squadron RFC carrying out a patrol which had commenced at 12.50pm that day.   During combat this officer's aircraft was shot up and forced to land through damage.   2nd Lt. Denison was wounded in the arm.   The position given was B.25.c.1.9.

It would seem that the squadron operated their obsolete aircraft in a ground attack that day.  Would the officer to which I refer be your relative and what pattern of entry to the RFC did this gentleman follow, e.g. from which regiment?  PhilipG.

Thank you very much PhilipG - that is indeed my late father. Answers to your questions & a copy of the casualty report are on the website;

http://amos-denison.life/onewebmedia/Service_in_the_Armed_Forces_in_World_Wars.html

We are trying hard to complete the website regarding his WWII time in the RAF so that it might be ready by next Tuesday 20th July for the Biggest Ever RAF Fly Past over London with 100 aircraft [subject to weather!] and Heathrow Airport closed. My father did his first "solo" flight on 21st July 1916 and married my mother from RAF Montford Bridge on 20th July - in 1944.  Fun things coincidences!

Then we hope that my club [the RAF Club] will link their website to ours later in the year.

David,

Thank you.  I wish you every success with the web site.    (It so happens that early in 1945 I flew from Gosport airfield.   It was being used as a satellite to nearby Lee on Solent.  Even in my old age, I vividly remember our stay there as I was one of the first to the crash site in a wood alongside the airfield.  I watched the cross-wind approach of a Firefly aircraft suffering from severe engine trouble and saw it crash into the trees killing the pilot instantly.      I see your relative went solo in a week.   It took me longer than that in '43.   Stirring times).  Thanks again. PhilipG.

Hi all,

I'm looking into the history of the Oldham territorials after pouring over a book by Bill Mitchinson and trying to piece together my Great Grandads war record with the 1/10 battallion.

I've had a look at the war records on the kew website and was surprised to find as well as the Manchesters he appears to have served in the rfc as well.

I still have photos of him and his best pal Ernest Drinkwater who was kia in Gallipoli and I also still have his medal set pip squeak and Wilfred but really that's about it.

Any more information regarding his war service would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dirk,
James worked for Royton Ring Mill Ltd https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBM%2FOLDROH%2F14&parentid=GBM%2FOLDROH%2F00001194
The RAF record provides a lot of information and I can't add much more. Happy hunting though.
Oldham Archives may have newspaper articles from the Chronicle. I'd guess he was wounded in 1917/18.
Welcome to the Forum.
