« on: November 02, 2010, 05:34:15 PM »
hello all

can anyone advise the date that the 1/6th Btn departed England for Gallipoli. I have two conflicting dates of the 3rd and 9th May 1915?
many thanks

The Division move over seas in Sept 1914 to Eygpt.

The Battalion left for Egypt on 10 September 1914

On 3 May 1915, the 5th and 6th Manchesters boarded the Derflinger at Alexandria for Gallipoli

Extract from 'Great Gable to Gallipoli', the diary of Claude Worthington.

"2nd May. Packed up and returned to store all barracks stuff.  Baggage for first transport left 7.0 pm.  A & B Companies left at 10.00am, marched to Naldouli station, left 12.50pm.  Arrive Alexandria 5.40pm.  Second  train left at 2.50pm and arrived at 8.45pm at Alexandria.

3rd May.  HMS Derflinger came in at about 6.30, she had wounded on board and had to be cleaned before we could go on board.  Loaded stores wagons and baggage and all on board ready to move by 6.00pm.  Left about 9.30pm.  Transport on HT Cuthbert.  7th & 8th Battalions on Ionian.  We had on Derflinger 5th & 6th Battalions, Army Service Corps details and some Australians."
