George Wilkinson and Harry Taylor
« on: March 20, 2008, 03:01:01 PM »
Hi, does anyone have access to the SDGW CD-Rom and would it possible for you to do a search on George Wilkinson and Harry Taylor? They both appear on the Irlam and Cadishead War Memorial as Manchester Regiment but I cannot find them. There are many entries in the CWGC for both names but nothing in the additional information field that would link them back to my area.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers
Pete

Hi Chris, if it's not too much bother I could do with them all. I haven't got any idea which one is mine so I'm searching for clues.

Cheers

pete.
the memorial seems to be out of date with regards to regiments, some of the men are listed with their former regts.
if chris doesnt mind searching SDGW,try george wilkinson, born harpurhey

there was a geo wilkinson who was born in harpurhey, but lived with his uncle, thomas bond at 619 liverpool rd,irlam,he was a brick setter, would have been about 35yrs old when the war started.

Mack, thanks for this. He must be my George Wilkinson.

Chris, would you mind doing the search when you get the chance? I realise that I can pay for this on "Find my past" but as you know when you're researching around 200 soldiers it can get very expensive. Thanks for the info on Harry Taylor.

Thanks in advance
Pete

Hi, sorry to resurrect an old topic, but I came across a book published in late 1917 "The World War - Irlam and Cadishead's Part - Official Record and Roll of Honour 1914 - 1917" which has a photo of George Wilkinson (attached). I'm fairly certain the cap badge is Manchester Regt. I realise it's not the greatest photo but are there any other clues ?

The entry in the book states Private George Wilkinson, Manchester Regiment (same as the war memorial). As stated previously, there are no Geo Wilkinsons from the Manchesters on the CWGC or SDGW so maybe he transferred to another regiment at some point. The group of soldiers on the same page as George all died between Sept 16 and Nov 16 so George probably died around the same time.

Mack spotted someone from the census from Harphurhey who was living in Irlam at the time but the photo looks younger (to me) than 35 years old. There is a George Wilkins from the Manchesters on the CWGC (see below) but there is no additional info that would link him to Irlam and Cadishead.

WILKINS, GEORGE  Private 7273 09/07/1916  Unknown Manchester Regiment United Kingdom Pier and Face 13 A and 14 C. THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Does anyone have any idea where I could look next?

Cheers
