Next two parts.

News and Articles form Findmypast

New Militia records launched

Adding to our British Army Service Records 1760-1915 collection, we have just published records of over half a million militia members in our Militia Attestation Papers 1806-1915.
Militia Attestation Papers 1806-1915

These records offer a rich source of information to the family historian. Attestation refers to the papers drawn up upon joining. These records were annotated until the solider was discharged so provide full details of time in service. And, since the militia recruits were part-time, there are details of the jobs the men undertook for the rest of the time.

The Militia was a voluntary county-based part-time force for home defence. It ceased to be summoned after the Civil War but was revived in 1757, when the Militia Act established militia regiments in all counties of England and Wales. They have information about birth date and place.

You will often find physical descriptions including distinguishing marks including tattoos. In the absence of photographs, these records are an essential tool in imagining what your ancestors were like - although some of the later records do include photographs. You’ll also be able to see the individual’s signature.

These records are brought to you online in association with The National Archives (TNA). The TNA record series number is ‘WO96’: WO simply indicates that the records were created by the War Office, the precursor of today’s Ministry of Defence.

Mons Star.
Fascinating stuff.  There has never before been any mention of his being in the Militia.  But this ties in with his enlistment date into the Regular army in September 1904.
These documents also show his propensity for bending the facts. His birth certificate dated 18 September 1890 records him as being born in Egypt in 1888... but that's another story.

monsstar,

Just looked at them on the medal forum, very impressive.

They are not Daves by the way, although he would sell his parents to own them

I would be interested to hear more from Robert about the suspicions regarding the medals, sounds intriguing!

His award of the VC is recorded in the London Gazette of 23 August 1915 and the award of the Russian Order of St George (4th class) in the LG of 25 August 1915.

However although he later claimed and wore the French Croix de Guerre there is no record of the award ever having been made to him.

Robert,

It is not unusual for French C de G's not to be gazetted.

Having said that, for someone of his importance you would think it would have been recorded somewhere.

However, a magnificent gallantry group to a great hero, with or without the C de G.

Probably destined for the Ashcroft Gallery in the near future, who knows!

Hello,

This thread promts me to mention a Manchester Regiment 1915 Trio of medals I have to a Jewish recipient.

11074  Pte.  Ronald L. NAPHTALI,   18th (S)(3rd City)Bn. E Coy, 17 Platoon

b. 1899 at Chorlton on Medlock. He has a very old Hebrew surname, being one of the original 12 tribes of Israel. He was of course Jewish and his family were undertakers.

He enlisted 29.1.1915 aged just 16 (he claimed to have born in 1895) and went to France 8.11.1915 and saw action throughout. Transferred to the 12th Bn in 1918.

Lived in Rusholme in the 1950's. His papers are available on Ancestry but the cencus returns prove his actual age.

An interesting group.

regards
