Hi - you can tell I am an old newbie (or is it new oldie ?)

Just posted a request on another part of the site and have just found this bit re Manchester Railways - so bit of duplication on its way.

My great Grandfather Thomas (Ambrose) Walker was involved in the Manchesters from 1890s till some time in early 1915 (discharged on sick grounds). We was involved in Manchester Railways in 1939 - is there any help on here to take us back to when he first joined the railways ?

any help would be wonderful
