Montauban occupation by 111th Baden Reserve Infantry Regiment
« on: October 28, 2023, 08:20:01 AM »
An extensive collection of the regiments post cards was recently sold on eBay.  The titles show the 111th Regment were in the Montuaban / Somme area through 1914/15. I picked up some of them. This is a view of the Church in 1914 and inside 1914/15.

German Infantry soldiers inside Montauban Church and a Cross erected - probably at the corner of La Place.

The destoyed Mairie and Bavaria Cemetery - At La Place again I think.  This plot was also used for 1st July 1916 casualties until they were concentrated to Dantzig Alley.

Houses on La Grand Rue and a village street.  I suspect the 2nd image may be the location of the Pals Memorial (Fascinating to think of my Grandad viewing these scenes on his way to Triangle Point)

The German perspective of the French/British positions in Maricourt, from Montauban.  Maricourt Wood and buildings in the village can be seen along with the poplar lined Albert - Peronne Road. I need to take a zoomed image to see Manchine Gun Wood and possibly Oxford / Cambridge Copse.  We can certainly see the clear field of fire of the German machine gunners over the Manchesters' line of advance.

My annotated image was taken from the side of the sunken lane to the east of of Montauban.

View from German strongpoint  of Valley Trench facing Talus Bois  - near Brick Point. Enfilade machine gun fire from postions close to this location accounted for many Manchester Regiment casualties, until they were silenced by men from 16th Bn.
