James Finlay Dempster - CO which btn?
« on: June 13, 2010, 11:14:49 AM »
The London Gazette states that James Finlay Dempster was made acting Lt-Col 17/5/17 commanding a battalion. I am presuming that this was with the Manchesters. Does anyone know which battalion and when his command finished.

His medal index card says;

Lt Col, Manchester Regt, Brigade Staff Officer with 65th Infantry Brigade, 22nd Division.

65th Inf Bde had the following units;

9th KO,14th Kings,12th LF & 9th E.Lanc.

The 66th Inf Bde 22nd Division, had the 13th Battalion Manchester Regt. The 22nd Division was a New Army Division of the Regular British Army,

The Division moved to France in Aug/Sept 1915, and  Oct 1915 the 22nd Division moved to Salonika (Macedonia).

The other unit on his MIC is the 1/8th Bn Notts & Derby Regiment, this unit was in the 139th Brigade,46th Division which only served in France.

He was a reguler officer but from the reserve of officers, He was MID LG-21/12/17  Dempster JF Capt, acting Lt Col (Res of Off) he also was awarded the DSO, & 1915 Star BWM & VM.
