on this dreadful day,710 officers+men from the regiment lay in the fields of france and flanders, never to rise again, the 22nd battalion alone lost 201 officers and men,16th batt 81,17th batt 116,18th batt 38,19th batt 60,20th batt 124,21st batt 63.over 140 men died of wounds over the next 5 days
in the whole of july, the manchesters lost nearly 3770 officers and men.

the city of Manchester in july 1916 lost approx.7500 soldiers from all the various regiments, and these are only those who show up as having connections to our city,so the toll will have been much higher.

Mack,

Very appropriate remembrance.     (In 1916 - the month before the First Day of The Somme - should also be remembered.    Over 5000 RN seaman went down with their ships at the Battle of Jutland.   Boy First Class Cornwell won the VC in that naval engagement).    PhilipG.
