Cat,
Yes, it will show when he changed regiments. Be sure to fill in the form for Next of Kin applicants rather than the general enquiry applicants form,  otherwise, despite what is printed on the forms, some information may be withheld.

Thanks for that. In searching through the family archives I have come across a different South Africa medal for someone who is not related to me (not sure why it was there). This soldier was in the RAMC. Do you have any ideas on how I could possibly reunite this medal with the soldiers family - or even if it would be possible?

It would be an uphill task particularly if it belonged to Pte Smith, but nothing is impossible. The British Medal Forum has lists of medals which are being sought but not always by the family. http://www.britishmedalforum.com

The medal obviously meant something to someone in your family. Personaly I‘d do some research on it first otherwise you might end up kicking yourself.

Hi Cat
You could try putting the question to the RAMC Association.
See:  https://www.ramcassociation.org.uk/
If you do give the persons name and number but not what medal it is.
If they cannot help with contacting the family and you wanted to you could donate it to the RAMC Museum.
See: https://museumofmilitarymedicine.org.uk/
My step son served in the RAMC.

Cat.
What is the name and number on the RAMC medal?  Several men from the Manchester Volunteer Battalions served with the RAMC because of their previous experience & training..

Hi, The soldier's name is J. S. Burn, number 10972. I can't currently find any link to my family so not sure why we have his medal. It has 2 bars, South Africa 1901 & 1902, the original (I assume) ribbon although the colours are not great. It was in a very dirty state so I have given it a very quick clean in the way that I was advised and you can now read the engraving around the edge.

As yet, I haven't had a response form the RAMC.

As the medal has the 2 bars you have the King‘s South Africa Medal, which will have the bust of King Edward VII on the obverse, for John Joseph Slater Burn. He was also entitled to the Queens South Africa Medal with the bars Paardeberg, Dreifontein, Relief of Kimberley and Transvaal. If I have read the roll correctly, he served with 23 Stationary Hospital, No1 General Hospital and 13th Brigade Field Hospital while in S.Africa.

Sorry Cat, his first name is Joseph not John, I don‘t know how I managed that.

Cat, do I take it by this that you have now connected him to your family?

Yes, but not a he is not a blood relative so I'm not sure why the medal is in my family archives but hopefully I may be able to get contact details for his grandson through a family member.

Thanks so much, I will order the certificate tomorrow and see what info comes from that

Thanks for the above Charlie. The death certificate was absolutely the right one and I now know that he also had a son and I have an uncle I never knew anything about, so further research now required and I'll see where that journey takes me.
