Matt, wounded soldiers returned from the front were allocated to the depot until they were fit for service. I'm working away at the moment but should be able to provide further info about Sgt John Dunn when I get home tomorrow night.

I've not seen many scrolls so couldn't comment. He could have been wounded in France or Gallipoli. I'll confirm tomorrow.

hiya matt
when a soldier is wounded,he is struck off the strenghth of his battalion and paid by the regimental depot until hes posted to his next unit after hes recovered.
act/sgt 1926 john, edward dunn died of wounds in chester royal infirmary,he was a prewar regular serving in india with the 1st manchesters,at some point,he was transferred to the 11th manchesters, many regular and territorials were used to form the 11th battalion, the idea was that the battalion would be ready made from serving soldiers and its original destination was france, but it ended up going to Gallipoli
technically speaking, the 11th battalion was the first of the pals battalions

DUNN, John Edward. Cpl 1926.

John was the son of John Edward and Annie Dunn of 47 Husband Street, Collyhurst. Pre-war service with 1st Manchester’s.

He enlisted Ashton-under-Lyne (almost certainly on Reserve, so 'rejoined' might be more appropriate). Disembarked France 27th August 1914 and served on the Western Front with 2nd Manchester’s.

Joined 11th Manchesters in Gallipoli as part of a reinforcement draft on 12th November 1915. A fairly large number of 2nd Manchester men wounded in the 1914 Western Front battles were later, once they were fit again, sent as reinforcement drafts to join the 11th Manchesters in Gallipoli. It is therefore likely that John was wounded twice during his service (while serving with the 2nd and 11th Battalions).

Summary of 11th Bn movements (after 12th November 1915). John could have been wounded at any of these locations:

15th December 1915 - evacuated Gallipoli to Mudros
21st December 1915 to Imbros
28th January 1916 back to Mudros to trans-ship to Alexandria, Egypt
30th January 1916 arrived Alexandria, Egypt
19th February 1916 El Ferdan, Egypt
12th June to Kantara, Egypt
2nd/3rd July 1916 to Alexandria (sailed 3rd July)
8th July 1916 Arrived Marseilles
19th July 1916 Moved into trenches at Wailly (Western Front) and were still in this area on 1st September 1916 (the day John passed away)

John died of wounds 1st September 1916, aged 24. Buried in the Soldiers’ Plot, Moston (St Joseph’s) Roman Catholic Cemetery, Manchester.

In 1928, his mother, Annie, applied for her son’s medals. Awarded 1914 Star trio.

I think John Dunn did not serve with the 2nd at all and was serving with the 1st Bn in India at the outbreak of war.

He appears as a L/Cpl on the 1st Bn roll of those entitled to the 1914 Star along with over 700 Officers and men of the battalion, including the C.O. Lt.Col. Strickland, whose disembarkation date is recorded as 27.08.1914. I suggest that this date is the embarkation date, ie the date they boarded the ship that sailed on the 29th. Another possibility, however remote, is that a clerical error has the battalion disembarking in France on the 27th August instead of 27th September.

I agree with Charlie here. Interesting to note 635 Arthur Robin’s Casualty Record also indicates disembarkation from Karachi on 27th August and arrival in France on 26th September.  The Medal Roll specifies 27th August for entry in France and qualification for the 1914 Star.  Arthur was a member of B Company of 1st Manchesters.  He had extended his service by two years on 5th August, just after the commencement of the War.
