DUNN, John Edward. Cpl 1926.
John was the son of John Edward and Annie Dunn of 47 Husband Street, Collyhurst. Pre-war service with 1st Manchester’s.
He enlisted Ashton-under-Lyne (almost certainly on Reserve, so 'rejoined' might be more appropriate). Disembarked France 27th August 1914 and served on the Western Front with 2nd Manchester’s.
Joined 11th Manchesters in Gallipoli as part of a reinforcement draft on 12th November 1915. A fairly large number of 2nd Manchester men wounded in the 1914 Western Front battles were later, once they were fit again, sent as reinforcement drafts to join the 11th Manchesters in Gallipoli. It is therefore likely that John was wounded twice during his service (while serving with the 2nd and 11th Battalions).
Summary of 11th Bn movements (after 12th November 1915). John could have been wounded at any of these locations:
15th December 1915 - evacuated Gallipoli to Mudros
21st December 1915 to Imbros
28th January 1916 back to Mudros to trans-ship to Alexandria, Egypt
30th January 1916 arrived Alexandria, Egypt
19th February 1916 El Ferdan, Egypt
12th June to Kantara, Egypt
2nd/3rd July 1916 to Alexandria (sailed 3rd July)
8th July 1916 Arrived Marseilles
19th July 1916 Moved into trenches at Wailly (Western Front) and were still in this area on 1st September 1916 (the day John passed away)
John died of wounds 1st September 1916, aged 24. Buried in the Soldiers’ Plot, Moston (St Joseph’s) Roman Catholic Cemetery, Manchester.
In 1928, his mother, Annie, applied for her son’s medals. Awarded 1914 Star trio.
