My Uncle, Corporal William Joseph Donnan was a member of the 2nd/9th Battalion The Manchester Regiment, killed at Ypres in October 1917, and commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.

hiya graham
your uncle was originally in the 18th manchesters until he was accidentally shot in the face on 15-8-1916 by one of his mates who was cleaning his rifle,he was admitted to the 5th general hospital at Rouen and then evacuated home on the hospital ship st.denis,when he recovered he was posted to the 2/9th manchesters,he was promoted to corporal when corporal 350780 henry aspinall was reduced to private,henry aspinall was killed the same day as your uncle

he was a musketry instructor

Many thanks for your reply.  I have only just returned to my research.  I did get to the Somme last July to commemorate George Albert Donnan his brother who served with the 15 Bn. Royal Scots and who died on 1st July 1916.  I have been lucky in obtaining tickets for the ceremony at Tyne Cot next July.

May I enquire the source of your information please?
