The Manchester Rifle Volunteers? - photograph

A friend has sent me the attached photograph of a probable relative and is asking for help in identifying the uniform and probable age of the photograph.
The photograph is obviously a studio portrait taken by Walter Hildyard of Dulcie Street, Manchester.
Is the subject wearing the uniform of the Manchester Rifle Volunteers?
When was it probably taken - 1860s-1870s?
I'm guessing that the flintlock musket may just be out of the photographer's prop box?
Any further help or information most gratefully received.

He is 6th Lancashire (1st Manchester) RVC

Is the musket a prop or could it be an 1853 pattern Enfield 1853 - I guess they didn't have the latest weaponry or did they have to provide their own?
