francis pitt lancaster 216 6th battn
« on: April 29, 2008, 12:56:26 AM »
I am looking for additional information on my Great grand father and have the following information from various sources
Serjeant Francis Pitt-Lancaster
6th Bn Manchester Regiment
Reg No 216
I have evidence that he was awarded the TFE medal (Date of Army Order 101. 1/4/14). Would he have been entitled to other medals as well?

Francis lived and worked in Manchester as a dentist, he was married to Lillian Mock and they had 4 children.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Tim

Hi Chris,

Thank you for the welcome and thank you for moving the post. I was wondering if I should have placed it in a new post.

I checked the Archive records this morning and paid to down load the record WO 372/24 which didn't give me the information that I received for other family members.

The record was for the  The "TFE Medal"

Across the top of the entry it says to see card. Lancaster. F P, however when I did this I got the same Catalogue reference number (which I took to mean the same record) he would have been 39 in 1914 Would this have restricted his potential for active service?

Cheers Tim

hi tim

at 39 i think he was right on the edge, without consulting any books (i am at work) i am not 100% sure what the upper age limit was in 1914. the 6th battalion was a territorial battalion and as such the individual soldiers were asked if they would serve abroad. i am wondering if at 39 he would have been considered.

can we have a look at the medal card please, you can attach it using the additional options under the reply box

Hi Colonel,

Thank you for your post that most have been the card listed for Lancaster FP.

Can someone explain what the other information on the Medal Card is?

Hi Mack, I had him listed at that address in 1901 he and the family moved to Oxford Rd by 1913.

Chris I am still trying to get another copy of the Card for Francis Pitt-Lancaster uploaded.

Once again that you for your replies.

Cheers Tim

Hi Tim, The card states that Francis enlisted in the 6th Battalion on 6th April 1908, and was discharged on the 5th August 1914. Sickness?

I am checking ancestry for his army service record, but so far, no luck.

The Colonel.

i would agree with that, discharged as (xvi) No longer physically fit for service due to sickness, thanks linda

so it would seem that he didn't serve during the war and was discharged on it's outbreak

What sort of illness would have caused his discharge? What ever it was didn't stop him practising as a dentist which he did up till early 1950.

i don't know and without access to his service records it would be total speculation

i can only imagine that his health was re-assessed on the outbreak of war with the thought in mind that he would be asked to fight as an infantryman

I was wondering about the address in Macks post, would the fact that one resident was a serjeant and another an RQMS imply that the address had some connection with the REgiment?

dont know if you guys have noticed, but sgt lancaster enlisted in april 1908,and the TFEM was awarded in april 1914,thats only 6 years service, the medal is awarded for 12 years service,is it possible, that this medal card,is for a second award.
if a soldier served another 6 years after being awarded a TFEM,then he was entitled to a second award.
