« on: April 28, 2008, 06:24:57 PM »
I am trying to find out what battalion my Grandfather George Charles Godwin was in. He was a pow in Japan but I dont know much about where, how long, why, etc. He lived in Longsight in Manchester. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi David and a Warm Welcome to The Forum  ;D

The National Archives hold some information regarding PoW's for WW2, further information can be gleaned from reading their research guide.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=303

Also, I wondered if the family had considered obtaining his service record, which would be held in Glasgow and available to next of kin via:

http://www.veterans-uk.info/

The other place you may wish to enquire is at The Red Cross in Geneva.

As you may appreciate, personal information for WW2 service personel is not readily available online, mostly for reasons of privacy.

Hope some of this helps !

David
There was a 3535926 Pte G C Godwin in the 1st Bn Manchester Regiment, the Order of Battle for Singapore has him in No 7 Platoon.  If you live near or can get to the Regimental Museum and Archive in Ashton Under Lyne the archive may have more information on him.  There is a temporary exhibition on at the museum on the Far East POW's that finishes at the end of June.
If you would like to contact me via the Private Message facility on the forum I may be able to help some more.
Have a look at the photo section for Far East Photos.

David, a little more information for you.  Your grandfather was sent to Formosa (Taiwan) and was in POW Camp No 3 (Heito) at first as was my father, he was moved at some time to No 1 POW Camp (Kinkaseki), this camp was known as the copper mine Hell Camp.
Have a look at   http://www.powtaiwan.org/ His name is amongs the list of men on this site.
