Bradford colliery and the Manchesters
« on: March 16, 2015, 10:25:07 PM »
I'm trying to find as many names of men from Bradford pit who joined the Mcrs for either world war. I am aware of the rolls of honour for both wars but am hoping members may be able to give more details such as if they survived or were injurer or killed, did survivors return to the pit, addresses , service numbers etc.

Thanks

Simon

Mack

I think the idea of pinning the thread would be great. I did search Bradford Colliery and noticed the Mcrs you mention. I'm just as interested in those who survived if any members can assist. There may even be survivors still alive today.

Thanks

Simon

Previous service with the North Staffordshire Regiment, Pte 4312, discharged on 16.07.08, after 14 years, 2 months service. Married Jessie Glover, at St Johns Church, Chelsea, on 25.12.09. Daughter, Dorothy Kathleen Jessie, born, at Lambeth, on 20.12.10 and by 1914 was working as a collier (timberers mate in the coal mines), for Bradford Colliery Company, Manchester. Enlisted Manchester on 27.08.14, his description on enlistment recorded as 5ft 7in, 133lbs, blue eyes, light brown hair. Church of England. Appointed paid L/Cpl, at the Depot, on 29.08.14 and posted, same day, to 11th Battalion. Promoted to A/Cpl on 19.09.14. Appointed paid L/Sgt on 20.03.15. Promoted A/Sgt 18.06.15. Wounded GSW thigh on 07.08.15. Disembarked England on 23.08.15 and admitted to 2 Western General Hospital, Manchester same day. Reported wounded, casualty list, Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser, 15.09.15. Posted to the strength of Depot (this was an administrative posting whilst he was in hospital). Leave, in Harlesden, between 15.10.15 to 24.10.15 (Wifes address: 23, Milton Ave, Harlesden, London. Previously address 3 Park Square West, Regents Park, London). Posted to 3rd (Reserve) Battalion 27.10.15. Embarked, for the BEF, from Folkestone on 24.08.16, disembarked same day at Boulogne. Posted to 30 IBD, Etaples. On 11.09.16 joined the battalion in the field.  It appears he served some time with 2nd Battalion but by 1917 he was certainly back serving with the 11th Battalion. Appointed A/CSM 17.08.17 (11th Battalion). Promoted Warrant Officer Class 2 with substantive rank of Colour Sgt and appointed CSM, with effect same day (11.08.17). UK leave 25.08.17 to 04.09.17. Awarded DCM as A/CSM with 11th Manchesters, for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On one occasion, when all his officers became casualties, he took charge of the company, and displayed great courage, initiative, and powers of leadership in taking it forward and organising a new line. Joined a Depot at Etaples in June 1918 and appears to have remained there during the summer. Posted to Manchester Regiment Depot on 12.09.18. Posted to 4th (Reserve) Battalion on 01.10.18. To Class Z, Army Reserve on 09.01.19. Address on transfer to reserve recorded as 4 Stevens Cottage, High St, West Wickham, Kent.

I suspect that his DCM was awarded during the attack on Poelcappelle on 4th October 1917 but I still need to prove this.

Regards
Pete

Simon, the above info is from service and pension records that specifically reference the Bradford Colliery. Many of the records were destroyed in the Blitz therefore there are gaps. Also some of the Attestation forms did not name the employer. I have lots of other 11th Manchesters who lived in the Bradford area and other members will probably have information on men of the other battalions but without realising that they worked at the colliery. Could I suggest you post a list of names from the roll of honour and we can try and add information?

Regards
Pete

Simon, apologies for slow response, I've only just noticed your post. I've found the following possibles, however, none can be considered conclusive without some sort of corroborating evidence (the roll only has initials and no regiment and many of the names are quite common)

CONCAH, [no initial]. Possibly CONCAH, Edward. Pte 13680. Disembarked 14.07.15. Born St Helens. Resided Bradford district of Manchester. Enlisted Manchester. Son of Martin Concah, of 137 Barmouth St, Bradford district, Manchester. DOW 11.12.16, age 23. Buried St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.
GALLEY, James. Pte 3685. Disembarked 14.07.15. Born Manchester. Son of William and Jane Galley, of 100 Cross St, Bradford. Husband of Harriet Galley, of 94 Lewis St, Miles Platting, Manchester. Enlisted Manchester. Awarded MM. KIA 16.08.17, age 33. Commemorated Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
GOODWIN, William. Pte 3406. Disembarked 14.07.15. To Class Z, Army Reserve 29.03.19. MIC records address as 13 Holt St, Bradford, Manchester.

In addition, although you've not got to letter 'S' and onwards, I've listed out below other Bradford men who may be on your list. The only link that I know of is there address:

SIBBLES, Herbert. Pte 3181. Disembarked 14.07.15. Born Ancoats, Manchester. Resided Bradford, Lancashire. Enlisted Manchester. Later served 12th Manchesters with whom KIA, whilst a Sgt, on 20.08.18. Buried Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont, France.
SKARRATT, Samuel. L/Cpl 5525. Disembarked 14.07.15. Reported wounded, casualty list, Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser, 15.09.15. Born Bradford, Manchester. Resided Clayton, Manchester. Enlisted Manchester. KIA 05.10.17. Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
SMITH, Daniel. Pte 9604. Disembarked 14.07.15. Born Clayton, Manchester. 123 Barmouth St, Bradford district of Manchester. Enlisted Manchester. Wounded 21.08.15. Reported as wounded on a casualty list published in the Manchester Evening News 29.09.15. Roll records death assumed 22 August 1915. SDGW & CWGC record KIA on 22.08.15. Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.
SPROSTON, Harry. Pte 16603. Born Bradford, Lancashire. Husband of Nellie Sproston, of 157 Craig Rd, Gorton, Manchester. Enlisted Manchester. KIA 26.09.16, age 34. Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
WITHERS, Albert Edward. L/Cpl 4834. Born and resided Bradford, Manchester. Son of George Henry and Elizabeth Withers, of Bradford; husband of Emma Withers, of 99 Cross St, Bradford, Manchester. Later Sgt (SDGW records rank as L/Sgt). KIA 29.05.17, age 29. Buried Pond Farm Cemetery, Heuvelland, Belgium.

Hope some of this helps.

Regards
Pete
