« on: March 11, 2015, 07:42:44 PM »
hi guys and thank you for letting me join

i'm looking for any information on a pte James Moffat
i don't know when he joined the Manchester's, all i have of him is on a medal (see inscription below)

5th Bn
The Manchester Regt
Athletics Meeting
Malta 1946
Winning team
Tug of War
PTE Moffat.J.

the inscription is on a silver medal, on the other side is a carving of a man pulling a rope
with this medal is another of the same style but has the fleur-de-lys with LXIII
any information on my grandfather will be very much appreciated

Hello,

Are you sure he was in the Manchester Regiment, as his service number relates to the General Service Corps.

He could have been a participant in the 5th (TA)Bn Sports day whilst on Malta, but not in the Regiment.  ie 5th Manchesters v Other Units

regards

like i said all the information i have for him is on those two medals
apparently there was some bad blood between him and the family
and he was not spoke about.
i was hoping he was part of such a great regiment
here's a picture of him (only one i have) in case anyone remembers him

Sphinx is perfectly correct in suggesting that your Grandfather was serving in another unit whilst stationed in Malta.  In such a small garrison it would have been normal to invite other units to take part in some of the athletic team events organised by the 5th Battalion.

If you live near Ashton-under-Lyne you could go to the regtl archives & look up the 1946 editions of the Regimental Gazette.  Under battalion notes there may be mention of the sports day and the prize winners.

Derek, have you considered applying for his service record? You can apply for a copy of someone else’s service records if one of the following apply:
you’re their immediate next of kin, eg spouse or parent
you’ve got consent from their immediate next of kin
you have a general research interest - you’ll only have access to limited information, unless they died more than 25 years ago

You’ll need to know the person’s full name, date of birth and service number
