Sgt William Freeman 9241 17th battalion. C Company X platoon
« on: September 01, 2013, 05:08:04 PM »
As you know I am researching the men in my Gt uncle Ted's platoon. Today I am trying to find out about William Freeman.
In my searches on FMP I located William on the Battalion Roll of Honour.  There were also 2 records on the Emplyers section which recorded  William as working for  Manchester Corporation - city police.  There was also a William Freeman on the Manchester Police Index (1858-1941) which states that this chap joined the force  12 August 1903 aged 27 hometown Manchester, single.  That would make his birth around 1875/6.  I looked on the census for 1911 and there was such a person living at 23 Nesbit St Hulme fitting the criteria.   Would this man be too old to be 'my William'?

Would it be a coincidence that the man listed underneath him  a Cpl JT Hobson 9250 was also a policeman and that they joined up together?

both freeman and hobson were policemen, sgt hobson was killed at montauban on 1st july 1916,in order for a policeman to enlist,he had to resign from the force first, those who joined the manchester pals regiments resigned en bloc on 25th jan 1915,theres a photo of sgt hobson in our manchester police section.
