3314 Sgt T Bull
« on: March 31, 2013, 04:44:13 PM »
He was a member of the 1st Volunteer Battalion based in Wigan and awarded the Volunteer Long Service & Good Conduct Medal between 1901 & 1908.

His medal is held in the museum and any information on this man would be appreciated.

Robert,

If he did serve in WW1 he would be quite old and most probably did not go overseas.

There is a SWB card for a T Bull from 1916 but its not a 5th (TF) Bn. number.

My grandfather Sgt John Aldred of Flixton was in the Territorials from 1897and 1st batt and 5th.But at Ashton.Did the various companies join together for Training Camps etc?

I have put a number of photos on my thread which might show this Sgt.There are several older men.

Mack.

The inscription on the medal is confirmed as 3314 Sergeant T. Bull, 1st Volunteer Battalion.

Remember this is a VB number not a TF.

There's probably something about him in the Wigan Archives, but that will have to wait.

Tonyrod.
I don't think that he served in WWI - he was probably too old, if still alive.  He had been awarded the Volunteer Long Service medal, the main qualification being 20 years service in the Volunteer Force and this was replaced by the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal in 1908.  So he must have achieved 20 years service with the Wigan Battalion before about 1901/1908.
