18th Battalion at Guillemont, Somme
« on: February 07, 2013, 10:09:46 AM »
Hello Manchesters Forum -

I'm currently working on the 18th battalion action at Guillemont 29 - 30 July 1916. Could anyone help with either a) The pages of the War Diary for the last week of July, or b) Any first hand account of the action ?

Any help hugely appreciated !

Best Wishes to all,

Stephen Bull

Trench map:

The flowers left thick at nightfall in the wood
This Eastertide call into mind the men,
Now far from home, who, with their sweethearts, should
Have gathered them and will do never again.

Thank you Kingo  :)  Now just bought a copy of the reprint of 16,17,18,19 histories - and attempting to get War Diary for crucial days from Nat Archives.... Unless somebody already has vital pages and are willing to share !

Best Wishes,

Stephen

The pages of the war diary for the actions at Guillemont have not stood the test of time well. My copies are virtually unreadable even after photoshopping them. The 18th Battalions war diary has not yet been digitised and may be a bit clearer when they get round to doing it. I will have another look tonight as i seem to recall there being a copy of a report sent to brigade giving an account of the Battalion's action on the day-but, again it may prove to be as unreadable as the rest of the war diary for July.

From the 30th Divisions war diary in the days preceding the assault on Guillemont and the preparations made for the battle. The photograph is of Lt F.A Harrison (the officer sent on the patrol to recce the enemy defences) from the local newspaper in Macclesfield, where he lived.(Click on the photos to enlarge)

Major H.B.O Williams (acting C.O's) account of the battle. Not very clear, but as good as it gets !. (Click on photo's to enlarge)

Kingo, that is superb !  Thank you for your help :) Shall I credit you or Manchseter's Forum in the finished piece ?  This particular incident is fascinating and different, but, even by standards of the period, clearly something of a disaster.

Best Wishes,

Stephen

Stephen- Below are the pages from the 90th Infantry Brigade War Diary. The big picture of the 29/30 July and not just the 18th Battalion. I hope they are of use. I will have a look at the 30th Division diaries and see if there is anything further. (Click on the images to enlarge)
