11755 Pte George Albert Brady - 4th City later the 1st City Battalion

Hello everyone,

In researching my family I have come across my Great Grandfather George Albert Brady, luckily his records seem to of survived and I'll list what I have found out so far, even with records there are gaps and I'm hoping people could add to this information.  

My Mother also thinks she has a photo with him in uniform and also after the war with his siblings so I'm hoping if he is present I could add him to the City Battalions photo project.

105 Moss Lane Swinton
Clerk for a.nicholas[accountants]of manchester

Enlisted 9 Sept 1914 into the 19th (4th City) Battalion

Promoted to LCpl in the 19th Battalion 19 Dec 1917

Reverted in rank to Pte and moved to 15th Plt, D company, 16th (1st City) Battalion on 6 Feb 1918 - his record says under af 337/1917 (I think)

Reported missing and POW on 21 Mar 1918- Could this be Manchester Hill a letter in his service record states he is in Germany and he signs it as a LCpl.
slightly wounded in the head on 21st march 1918
Repatriated 23 Dec 1918

Demobilised 10 Mar 1919 - his Identity paper states he is a LCpl

His medal Card states he was awarded the 15 Star, Victory Medal and British War Medal.

On his record the section that states were he served etc has a line through it saying cancelled.  Any extra information would be gratefully received.

Found my Great Grandfather listed in the City Battalions photos in 19th (Service) Battalion, B Company, Platoon No7.

Hopefully i'll be able to put a face to the name.

Thanks for that information, I just found him in the WW1 POW database on this forum, I've already found more out in the last 10 minutes than the last week!

Is there any likely POW camps he would of been held at?

i'me 85% sure that he was taken to the camp at lechfeld,he would probably have passed through the furstenfeldbruck camp on his way to lechfeld.

your query about his rank,he was posted to the 15th platoon.D.coy 16th manchesters on 6th february as a private and appointed unpaid lance corporal the following day

Hello that's brilliant Mac, with the rank could it be possible his service record is wrong? it states he was promoted 19th Dec 1917 and posted 6th Feb to the 16th and reverts to pte, unless I'm reading it completely wrong?

Was it quite common to change Battalions? or with the revert in rank could this of been disciplinary or is it as simple as there was no LCpl places and he was a unpaid LCpl?

Mark, The 19th Battalion was disbanded on the 6th February and the Men of A and B Company were sent to the 16th Battalion and the Men from C and D to the 17th Battalion. As you are probably aware, the post of Lance Corporal was only an appointment and not a rank, so he would probably revert to his substantive rank (Pte) on transfer to his new Battalion.

i've just had another look at georges records,he was already a lance corporal before he was posted to the 16th battalion,but was reverted back to his rank of private on the 6th february 1918 when his company was posted to the 16th battalion,then he was re-appointed as lance corporal on the 7th february.

there was also something in his records that makes him a bit unique,only 15 men walked off manchester hill untouched,the rest were either dead or wounded,george seems to have been one of the 15

hi mark,  looking up  Manchester hill  to the left behind trees is the quarry 1st photo,2nd looking  down towards enemy lines,  and 3rd looking over the other side from top, a few of us mods where there 2010.

Got hold of my Great Grandfathers Medals today and there was quite a bit with them, they were all contained in a metal tobacco tin the medals were in the original little white boxes and with the ribbons, there was also:

A miniature medal bar, looks like it would go through a button hole.
A Manchester Pals cap badge, solid brass type cap badge
A Manchesters cap badge, the bi metal type with a slider back
2 Brass bars saying - MANCHESTER
2 Brass shoulder titles with City/Manchester/4 on them
