Can we identify the regiment?
« on: October 10, 2011, 08:33:27 PM »
Dear All
I have just discovered my Granddads army ID number and am going to apply for his records.  I am told he was linked to a Manchester regiment and Rootschat has confirmed the ID # is a Manchester one.  Can anyone tell exactly what regiment it is from the number 3522178?
He was assigned to the tank regiment during WW2 and was a desert rat.
thanks

Hi

The following is the link between the Manchester Regiment and the Tank Regiment

Territorial Tank Regiments

41st RTR formed by converting the 10th battalion of The Manchester Regiment

The 41st (Oldham) Royal Tank Regiment (41 RTR) was an armoured regiment of the British Army from 1938 until 1956. It was part of the Royal Tank Regiment, itself part of the Royal Armoured Corps.

It was originally formed by converting the 10th battalion of The Manchester Regiment, a Territorial Army infantry battalion, to a tank unit. As part of 24th Armoured Brigade it took part in the Second Battle of El Alamein but then shared the fate of the rest of its brigade, being dispersed to provide reinforcements for other units. In 1947 the Regiment was re-formed and in 1956, it amalgamated with the 40th (The King's) Royal Tank Regiment to form the 40th/41st Royal Tank Regiment.

Can you give us the name of your Granddad.

A friend of mine was a Major in the 41st, he is now well into his 90's but may be able to remember a name.

Hi Leyther1

3522178 Private James Jones, joined the Manchester Regiment between the years 1927 and 1928 the attachment I have posted this from the regimental Gizette Vol VI No 1 January 1928.

I'm not sure which regular battalion he was in, however if you can get to the Manchester Regiment archives, at Ashton under Lyne you should be able to consult the information in the enlistment book ( MR4/6/5/12) This should give you the information which was recorded at the time of enlistment.

Best of Luck with your research
