Pvt Eric Buckley, 22452173
« on: September 27, 2011, 11:09:38 PM »
Some time ago i posted an enquiry with regard to my uncle, Pvt Eric Buckley who was killed on 28/2/1952 ' in Malayan Conflict.
I had a few very welcome results from that post, a picture of his grave from a kind person being one.
It refers to his death in the 'Jungle Bashers' but no details other than 'killed accidentally'. Does anyone know any details. Where in Manchester is the regiment museum, I am in the Midlands but would like to visit, we Buckleys are a Manchester family.

Good morning Carole,
Spotted your appeal on todays's post re your late uncle E.T. Buckley deceased in Malaya 1952; the only information was as you have previously reported

"Killed in traffic accident whilst driving his 15 cwt truck back to camp after collecting a returning patrol."

Whether or not the Museum would have anything else to add would in my opinion is highly unlikley but here is the address:-

The Museum of the Manchester Regiment, Ashton Town Hall, Market Place, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL6 6DL.

I sent you a photograph of the grave some time ago.

Best of luck,
George.

HI George
thanks for your reply... I spoke to Mr Rodulson today from the Veterans Group and he was also telling me about the Museum in Ashton. I am organising a visit there to have a look around, sounds really interesting an hopefully i will find out more about my uncle. I would love to find a photo as there are no family photos at all, I was a youngster when he left Manchester at at such a young age, sadly not to return. When i read the write up about Eric in the 'jungle Bashers'  [page 38 ]it sounded as though Eric and Private Hiscox were maybe in accidents on seperate days and not the same one??
regards, Carole

Hi again,
Whilst including a visit to the Museum might I also recommend a visit to Manchester Cathedral especially to include a good look around the Regimental Chapel and check the Memorials in particular those to the Malayan Vets including The Shrines.
Sorry not to be of any better information than these meager items, maybe some further details may come from within the M.T. section via photographs of some of the other members of the lads of that time but it was a long time ago and memories regretably do not improve over the years.

Best of luck in your ventures any way.
George.

Hi Carole as well as the Museum you will need to visit the Archive for any photos or records.  The bottom of the page on this link gives their address and contact details:  http://www.tameside.gov.uk/archives/manchesterregiment  Make an appointment so that they can get any relevant information ready for you.  The Archive is in a separate building not too far from the Museum, you will find the staff very helpfull, I did.
Best of luck.

Carole.
In the museum you will find a brass memorial plaque to the casualties in Malaya, which of course includes the name of your uncle.

In the Regimental Chapel in Manchester Cathedral you will also find the brand new stone memorial to those who died in Malaya.  This is to be dedicated during the regimental remembrance service on 11th November - which you are very welcome  to attend.
