I wonder if any kind member out there has any information as to how Sjt Pressley (40890) 16th Manchester won his Military Medal.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Regards Allan.

Hi Allan and Welcome to our Forum  ;D

The medal was Gazetted on 25th September 1917 as:

40890 Sjt. P. Pressley, Manch R. (Mansfield) on page 10033, of Issue 30312.

Is it a family medal?

Allan,

It was won at Zillebeke Bund, one of 14 to the 1st City Pals at that location.

Hello Wendi.

Thank you for your kind reply and information.

I have been given the task by the family of finding out something about the history of their relative and then they will probably dispose of it.

That would be sad.

There is a good book on the 16th Bn The Diary of an Unprofessional Soldier, by the late Capt Nash.

No longer in print but can be got on CD.

The Military Medal is the 'other ranks' equivalent to the Military Cross, which was awarded to Commissioned Officers and Warrant Officers in recognition of ...'gallantry during active operations against the enemy'

Sadly the citation for the medal was received by the recipient together with the medal and no copies were made.  Most were lost or destroyed by the recipient and therefore it is often difficult to establish the exact act of gallantry.

There is no doubt however that Sgt. Percy Pressley was a very brave man.

A really bashed and worn pair and MM by the looks.

Nice to see the seller has completely missed out all the information provided to him by the forum.  NOT!

Good luck with the price as well. ::)

Going back to one of my earlier replies, there were 14 MM's won at Zillebeke Bund on 31.7.1917 the first day of the 3rd battle of Ypres.

This is more than any other action the 16th were involved in WW1 by far.

Does anyone know why there were so many that day?

regards
