William Mayall Reg No 15122 MGC Reg No 67720
« on: December 26, 2010, 07:44:48 PM »
Hi

My great uncle William started out in the 24th Batt Manchester Regiment Reg No 15122 before he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps Reg No 67720.  Whilst with the MGC he won the Military Medal (CIT. London Gazette 23 Feb 1918) and I'd love to find out when he transferred (and why?) and if at all possible why he won the MM?  Sadly I believe that he died sometime in the 1930's after committing suicide with what now sounds like PTSD symptoms.

Thanks

Thanks Mack, that's fantastic.

Can you clarify though, if I read it correctly he was transferred to 16th Coy MGC whilst he was on leave but when he came back he actually went in to 1 Coy?

Does this also mean he would have been operating a Machine Gun with the 24th Batt whilst he was with them?  How many Machine Guns would the 24th have operated?  The reason I ask is that I've seen a post in the photo section of a Machine Gun 'team' for the 24th - he may be on this picture.

Also, (I'm sure this question has been asked before!) any chance of finding out what he actually did to receive the MM?  Do you know if there is a Chrocincle report?

Many thanks for all your help.

Phil

Cheers Mack

I went on Ancestry, I found their enlistment forms and their Medal Index Cards but not their Service Records.  I'll have another look.

From Battalion Cook to MM with the Machine Gun Corps - a fair old journey!!

Thanks Migky, that's him.  Do you know how I can get hold of a plan of the cemetery?  Also any signs of a cause of death?

Thanks again.

Cheers

Mack, I've had a look at his service record but can see no reference to him being a cook. Did you see it here or did you pick this up elsewhere?

Cheers
