Hi

I am unsure if my grand farther Albert Kendrick (26307) would be in the photos of the 17th Batt.

He enlisted on the 5th June 1915, Transferred to the 17th Battalion on the 30th August and I believe he went to France on the 10th March 1916

Would you be able to tell me his company and platoon?

Regards

Frank

Hi Frank, he's isn't on any of the photographs in the City Battalions Books. He must have enlisted later than the photos were taken or transferred from elsewhere. There are two A. Kendricks listed in the "Rolls of Honour of some Manchester Firms and Institutions". These list the men of some of the city's firms who served in HM Forces. The first A. Kendrick worked for the United Yeast Company Limited, Manchester, and the other for Bradford Colleries, Manchester. Could one of these be your grandfather?

Hope this helps

Cheers

Pete

Other than being in the Manchesters and fighting in the first war I know nothing about his life prior to enlisting.  He may well of entered via a firm or institute I have no knowledge of his working life pre 1915.

I believe he enlisted on the 5th June 1915 and transferred to the 17th Battalion on the 30th August. Is this to late a date to appear on the photos in the identity project.

His number is 26307 A.W Kendrick if you have any detail on which company and platoon he was in that would be very helpful.

Thank you for all the help.

Regards

Hi Frank, sorry for the late response. The photos were probably taken in early 1915 so he wouldnt have been on the photos. I don't know which company/platoon he was with, sorry.

17th Battalion - C Company - XI Platoon

I think from the photos I've posted on the RF Brereton thread below, that he is the 12th man in the back row of the platoon photo.

Cheers,

Roy

17th Btn B company Platoon 5.

2nd row (seated) sixth from left is 8418 William S Butterworth. In the photo, he is a corporal. Promoted to sergeant, he was killed in action on the 1st of July 1916 leading his platoon at Montauban.

Lest we forget.

19 Battalion
B Company
Platoon VIII
Believe Front Row 4 from the left hand side is W Baillie 11734

Best friend of A Robinson also somewhere in this picture.

Both mentioned in Albert William Andrews account  Orders are Orders A Manchester Pal on the Somme on page 29 and 30.  They had been charged with wearing their ear flaps down in Jan 1916.  A few days later they were called to Batt HQ at Bronfay Farm.  As they awaited their charge my Grandfather, Baillie's first cousin was close by watching the effects of an order to shell the German lines.  The response was a bombardment of Bronfay Farm in which Baillie was killed instantly and Robinson lay dying.  My Grandfather ran to the Guard House and took his cousins watch which is still in the family today.  The Baillie's had 3 sons all who died in WW1 with no survivors.  Fortunately my Grandfather survived until the 80's.  Some of his memories were captured by a local school but not sure if these recordings have survived.

Both buried at Chippilly Cemetary laid to rest side by side.  2 soldiers killed at the guard house are mentioned in the Regimental Records but the date is not in sync with the time this occurred.  + / - 3 ish days.
