Hi I live in South Africa and so cannot do any physical research in the UK. I am working on my family tree and would be interested in how I find out about my grand dad Frederick Harland Tilsley who fought in both wars. He died on 9 Jan 1918 during WW1 military service in Windhoek German South West Afica. I recently obtained his SA WW1 war record. This record indicates that he served 9 years in the Manchester Regiment. He was born in 1875 in Cheshire before moving to Gorton. He married during the Boer War and stayed in SA. Any service history will be of great help. Regards Willi Tilsley

Hi Themonstarr, Absolutely fanststic. He's the one. His birth certificate also onty uses F. One small piece of help please. When I enlarge the QSA the words break up and are rereadable. Can you perhaps decipher for me and tell which clasps he was entitled to. Thanks Willi

QSA Medal Roll. The note appears to read that the QSA medal was returned to Woolwich. Is it possible that the medal was never issued to Sgt Tilsley as he remained in South Africa. Can anyone help? Willi

Hi Willi
A bit late but welcome to the forum. Just saw the post. A very good book to get or loan that has the information that Harribobs posted but in more detail is the. The History of the Manchester Regiment (late the 62rd and 96th foot) Complied by Colonel H. C. Wylly, CB Vol 2 1883-1922
