96th and Manchester History
«

Hi everyone, this is my first post and I hope someone can help with information.
My great great step grandfather was George Stainfield who I know was a serjeant in the 96th before it became the 2nd Battalion of the Manchesters in 1881.
I would like to trace his movements from about 1870 to 1900 and would appreciate any information on the postings of the 96th and the 2nd Bt Manchesters during this period. Is this listed anywhere?
Many thanks if you are able to help.

Hello "Themonsstar"
Thank you very much for the regimental postings, I can't believe I have the exact information I needed so quickly. The tours of duty have confirmed one theory but sadly demolished another.
I am amazed at how long the 2nd Bt were in India. I have a photograph of my great great grandmother taken in India about 1885 judging from the her dress and I now know that some of my great uncles were born out there and so it must have been almost a permanent posting complete with their familes for some soldiers. I have not yet had any joy finding any of George Stainfield's service details, but hopefully they will be uncovered in due course.
Many thanks again for such brilliant and speedy help.

Yes, thankyou.
I spotted the post but so far have not had time to examin the WO97 records in detail but as my man did at least a minimum of 15 or 20 years he must have drawn a pension and should therefore be there somewhere.
I also came across your Delhi-Durbar Medal Roll for the 2nd Btn and from that I now know his Service Number and also noted that he had been promoted to Sgt-Major.
Thank goodness people have the desire and the time to research and transcribe all this information
Many thanks - Collers

WO 97 archives are very difficult to negotiate. I can find no quick way to locate the Manchesters.
Do you have any tips or suggestions to help with this?
Thanks

Their names are done alphabetically. so its by name not their regiment in WO97. You will need to go to the NA or get someone to do the search for you.

Thanks
Looks like I'll have to be patient for a while longer yet.
