any informaion no matter how small on this family member  tom lowe 20173, served in the above unit 1914 possible 1915, transfered to the yeo cyclists then 5/Cameron highlanders the unit he died with near ypres in 1918. any group photos? when he was with the 7th city battalion? or any family ie possible wife ect. his father was killed on 1-7-16 with the 1/kings own - matthew lowe

Matthew, He is recorded in the City Battalions Book as 20173 Pte Lawe-22nd Battalion A Company, 3 Platoon. (Click on pictures to enlarge)
He is somewhere on the photo-but we don't know where. Can you spot him ?.

thomas was age 22 when he died of wounds,his parents,matthew+emma lived at 8 browning st,beswick.
they previously lived at 5 adam st,middlesborough
he had 6 brothers and sisters
emma born ab1899
james born ab1900
matthew[jnr] born 12-9-02

Huh born 13-7-07
winifred born 26-4-12

pte 3051 matthew lowe
enlisted 19-8-14
aged 40
1st KORL
B.coy
6th platoon
occupation,labourer
to france 4-12-14
11-8-15 sent to 11th field ambulance with dyspepsia and then to the 4th casualty clearing station at beauval,he was put on the 7th ambulance train to rouen on 14th aug and admitted to the 3rd stationary hospital the same day,he was then sent to the convalescent depot at rouen on 16th aug and then sent to england and admitted to the 2nd western gen hospital manchester on 26-9-15
he was reported wounded and missing,on 1st july 1916
sgt/major thomas lowe,made enquiries to his whereabouts on behalf of his wife,but nothing was known,she later recieved the letters+cards she wrote to him
he was the son of matthew+mary,3 raglan st,ancoats
formerly served with the 1st manchesters but purchased his discharge

you guys have ben amazing, many many thanks!
anyone have a better copy of that photo? we do have a photo of tom lowe but its not that easy to pick him out from the group.
we think its matthew lowe's brother tom that was the Sgt maj (a veteran of India and south Africa) but that part of the record is missing we can see Sgt Maj 2/9th....but what regiment?
have visited tom's grae at ypres and his father name at thiepval, as for the family home, it slap bang under the Manchester city's new ground!

matthew lowe had misbehaved himself i notice 28 Field Punishment number 1 amongst others, ah well. to have both a father and son fall must have been unbelievable for my family......

you never know he is one of the ones i thought it may be, he would be 18 or 19 in the group picture. i will be doing a piece for the WFA magazine on both father and son, and  starting to do a talk for this Sept. The father was in the same battalion and missing the same day as the soldier found at serre in 2003, so there is a chance he was found, the names of the missing (91) were read out at the service the following march, and he was one of them......

I guess nothing more on the 1/kings, no probs just similar era family interest for me  Wink

the names of the missing (91) were read out at the service the following march, and he was one of them......


I would like to ask you where this service was held, I can understand if you want to keep the info privy until you have "published" but to know where, perhaps Manchester Cathedral ? would be good to know.
