How to obtain battalion number from discharge certificate
« on: January 04, 2008, 11:23:32 PM »
I have the discharge certificate for a relative, which gives the following information:

Number: 36618
Regiment: Manchester
Enlistment Place: Ashton Under Lyne
Date of enlistment: 29th April 1916
Date of Discharge: 1st February 1918
Reason: No longer physically fit for war service (G.S.W. Left Hand)
Height: 5' 2.5" (bantam?)

From this information is it possible to arrive at the battalion number, and hence perhaps an understanding of his war service?

Hi Harribobs,

Sorry, in my haste I forgot it. His name is Robert Beswick. He lived in Failsworth/Hollinwood both before and after his war service.

don't worry Chris, i forgot my own name on a regular basis  ;D

the first step is to download his medal index card from the national archives and post it here, you can get it from this link

http://www.rootschat.com/links/02hb/

it will cost you £3.50, but there's no guarantee at this point it will give us what we need

cheers

Hi Chris,
I've obtained the medal index card and a JPEG of it should be attached to this post.
It doesn't seem to show very much, so I'm not hopeful.

He was in the 18th Battalion. Have you check to see if there is another MIC for a SWB seeing that he was discharge in Feb 1918.

Thanks for the answer themonsstar, much appreciated.
If i may ask, how do you arrive at this info? Also there was only 1 MIC for Robert Beswick, No 36618, but what is a SWB anyway?
Thanks again,
Oxford.

the numbers and letters next to the medals refer to full medal rolls which contain more information, we need the index card to know which book and page it was on ;)

SWB :-  ( from the NA site )

Silver War Badge    For retirement, or discharge due to sickness or wounds caused by war service, at home or abroad, after 4 August 1914

Thanks again to both posters for this information.

My next question is perhaps obvious, can I now find Robert Beswick's Company, and possibly even his Platoon?  If so how would I go about it?

it's very very difficult to find such detailed information on a soldier, unless he was one of the original members of the battalion. Other ranks are rarely mentioned in the war diaries or official documents and when they are you would rarely get more info than their name. i am not even sure what to suggest
