Hi guys ..... I note that there is a £30 charge to access my late fathers service records (my mother is no longer alive). I'll save the rant about this charge being a disgrace for another time  ...... could you kindly let me know what I actually get for this? What level of detail will this service record tell me? I have my dad's service book somewhere - which from memory had some bumph at the front from his commanding officer & appeared to be a reference for a future life in civvie street..... is the £30 service record likely to be much same thing or will it contain full details of postings etc? As always - any advice much appreciated. Cheers. |

The book you have is his discharge book, his service records will tell you much more.
Ask for a full copy of his record as this should give you dates,times,places, posting overseas,units, NOK address, and lots more.

HI
I have just received my dads service record photocopys thereof about 13 pages most has not copyed well 5 sheets on a3 but my biggest problem is the medals detail 39-45star & italy star have a ref. of o2e cme & 1638/46 no clue to the meaning.
war medal 39-45 and defence medal are straight forward but the general service medal "palestine" and army order 146/47 118/49 reme /rmvc.also totaly baffeling.If i get a copy of this information and send it to the medal office will i get a correct copy of his medals haveing paid approx £160.00 to get them

thea, his service records will tell you the areas of war your father served in and medals were awarded for different war zones, the medals office will know the medals your father was entitled to. i am not referring to bravery awards,
1939-45 Star
Awarded: For 6 months service (2 months for operational aircrew) between 3 September 1939 and 15 August 1945 under operational command.
Atlantic Star
Awarded: For six months' service afloat in the Atlantic, Home Waters or Russian convoys.
Aircrews needed to complete one operational flight in area.
Air Crew Europe Star
Awarded: For operational flying from UK bases over Europe for two months
Africa Star
Awarded: For one or more days' service in North Africa between 10 June 1940 and 12 May 1943;
service afloat in the Mediterranean and on Malta
Pacific Star
Awarded: For service in the Pacific theatre of operations
Burma Star
Awarded: For service in Burma, China or Malaya between 11 December 1941 and 2 September 1945.
Italy Star
Awarded: For service in Italy, Sicily, Greece, Yugoslavia, Corsica, Sardinia and area
between 11 June 1943 and 8 May 1945
France and Germany Star
Awarded: For service in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany between 6 June 1944 and 8 May 1945
Defence Medal
Awarded: For 3 years' service in the United Kingdom between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945,
or 6 months overseas in a non-operational area subject to aerial attack
War Medal 1939-45
Awarded: To all persons serving full-time in the Armed Forces for 28 days between
3 September 1939 and 2 September 19
This maximum entitlement
1939-45 Star
Atlantic Star (or Aircrew Europe or France and Germany)
Africa Star
Pacific Star (or Burma Star)
Italy Star
Defence Medal
War Medal
Some examples are
A RAF pilot who qualified first for the Atlantic Star and then the France & Germany star,
would wear the Atlantic Star with France and Germany clasp.
A soldier who won the Pacific Star, and then gained the Burma Star,
would wear the Pacific Star with Burma clasp.

i will just have to take a copy of the copy and send it in to them and let them ask for the relevant monies that they require .
the REME museum sent me the index card info so combining the two lots of info should be a challenge for a later time ,along with family history of the fisrst world war.

thea, do you know there are no name or numbers on the medals, once you know what he was awarded you could get them from a medal dealer for maybe less money. just a thought. tonyrod

hiya thea. why did you pay £160 for your dads medals,the medal office cannot charge you for your dads medals,because they dont belong to them,they are the legal property of your father or his heir

ugust on the Gothic Line and a luxury cruise home on a hospital boat. Did about 5 months but got thr Italy Star.

39-45 star Italy star France & Germany star 39-45 defence medal Palestine45-48 medal & bar the other one not sure silver medal , ribbon is striped red blue white red white blue red.
how much would a dealer charge for these medals on a pin
