Joseph Lemon. Enlisted in the 1st Bn in 1903. Wounded at Le Cateau when a Sergeant with the 2nd Bn. Later as CSM of 'A' Company 3rd Battalion he was one of the ten soldiers particularly commended for their part in rescuing casualties when the 3rd Bn were bombed at Cleethorpes.
He became acting Regimental Sergeant Major of the 2nd Bn in1917 and RSM at the Depot from 1919 until 1922. He was awarded the Military Service Medal in January 1919.
On discharge he spent three years as an attendant at the Whitworth Art Gallery and a further 22 years as Commissionaire at the Refuge Assurance Company before finally retiring in 1949. He died at Romiley on 12 August 1950, aged 66.
What a man!!
He bequeathed his medals to the Regimental Museum.
