educated at manchester grammar school
worked in manchester as a barristers clerk before being called to the bar at grays inn in 1913
commissioned in 3rd manchesters as a 2/Lt in october 1914,and afterwards transferred to the 1st manchesters in france,fought at neuve chapelle and was MIDs for bravery in the field,he later took part in the second battle of ypres,where he won the MC,awarded for his actions on 26th april 1915,when the MG officer was wounded,he took charge of the guns and displayed great courage by collecting them togethor under heavy fire and bringing them into action,which assisted greatly in the defence of their new gains,in december 1915 he transferred to mesopotamia with the indian forces and took part in several engagements,he was severly wounded in the trenches at es sinn,he refused any offers of help from his men,and ordered them to save themselves
