Salford Barracks 1881 - Pte James Osborne

I am in the initial stages of trying to find out details of Private James Osborne who was registered in the 1881 census as being in Salford Barracks, aged 21.
Are there any army records that would help identify this particular Osborne and, was Salford Barracks used by an element of the army that became the Manchester Regiment.

hiya peebee.
Lt/col forster longfield was in charge of the barracks in 1881,if someone can ID which regt he was in charge of,from the army lists,that should give you the regt.

I have just had a vague piece of information that his father might have been one of the 'fencibles' in New Zealand.  The plot thickens!

No battalions of the Manchester Regiment were stationed at the Salford Infantry Barracks in 1881.
