account of an unknown 8th manchester officer
our trenches sloped down into the knoll, while those of the 6th manchesters, sloped up from the other side, the 5th manchesters were on our right, the consequences were that snipers hidden in the woods opposite the 6th manchesters, could enfilade us,and owing to a kink in the trench, snipers on the other side of the 5th manchesters, could shoot right into our trench,we were losing an average of about eight men killed or wounded every day
