Albert Bentley, 24th [service] battalion
« on: December 01, 2007, 04:10:58 PM »
Hi,my names Paul Richardson,my great uncle was Albert Bentley, who served in the Oldham Comrades, untill he was gassed in about 1916 .When he recovered ,they found out he was a fitter and he was sent into the A.O.C for the rest of the war.
I was lucky enough to have some good talks with Albert about his experiences, and would say my interest in the great war stem from that time.I was also lucky enough to inherit some photo's and badges etc.Unfortunately his medals went out of the family[
sold by his his sister who was terrified of being robbed for these 'valuable' items] and i would dearly like to bring them back into the family.Anyone who has knowledge of their whereabouts - i would be very gratefull.
I have posted some of the pictures here;
http://flickr.com/photos/20143949@N00/
I would also like to idendify a chap in one of the pictures who must of been a friend of my great uncle.
I believe he was also in the 24th,he signed the picture " your old chum dick"
Does anyone have an idea of who he was?
Thanks in advance.paul.

Thanks everyone for the information,it all helps to fill in some gaps.
I'm not convinced about 'Dick' being your Dick[sorry that sounded a bit rude!]
Albert was 20 in 1915 and the Dick in the photo i would say was the same sort of age, doesn't tally with 32.
Also he has quite prominant ears ,unlike the other chap.Of course i could be wrong.
I have a few other pics of training etc, would you like me to upload them for your collection?
regards,Paul.

Hi I don't think the unidentified man is the Richard Green we have on our site. I'd bet money on it not being the same man. Sorry. I was hoping it was him. Looking at them,  they are very different looking.
We could check all the "Dicks" in the 24th, far too many men probably or possibly run the photo in the Oldham Chron to see if anyone recognizes him?
What do you think. probably an Oldham Chap.
