Thanks for that Mack.  In that case I haven't a clue as to what the badge could be, it is such a pity I have no way of anchoring him to a specific identity.

I have to say I have been more than impressed with all of the help I have had from this site.  No doubt I will be back with more questions once I have another trawl through the old photographs belonging to my relation.
