1911 Census and Ashton Barracks
« on: July 29, 2009, 11:58:24 AM »
Good Morning, I hope someone can help me with a census question.
I am trying to establish just where my father, Mick Lally 2nd Btn, was in 1911, he should have been at the depot as he was only 16.
I have access to the 1911 census on line but am unable to find the barracks in the census. Perhaps I am entering the search incorrectly but if anyone can help with a reference or tips on how to gain access to the information I would be most grateful.
Many thanks
Regards
Mick Lally

Mick.
I suggest that you contact the regimental archives in Ashton.  I feel sure that they now have this information.

Hello,
I have cut and pasted the reply I received from the Archives. Hope it helps others to find what they are looking for

"Dear Michael

If you go into "How it works" and click on "who lived in your house" and the "advanced search" you will get a search box. In the street field type in Mossley Road and in the County field type Lancashire. At the bottom there is a field called Military. Type in Ashton Barracks and the records will come up. To proceed further to access the records you need to buy credits or buy a voucher. I hope this information will be of some assistance to you."

Regards
Mick

Can anyone describe what the results are like when you buy the credits, do you just get one page or are you able to search the whole of the regiment?
I am just looking for a birthplace for Robert James Whiteside, anyone know the best way to go about it?
Thanks Geoff
