With davesmum's permission, after George's
Something not quite right.
I posted the photo on RC and the general concensus is that he is wearing WW2 Battledress, the style of which varied much between 1939 and '45 without the web belt, 'cos he his home on leave, hence the gas mask.

Hi Wendi ,thanks for that ,it's a bit more detail for him anyway .I've given the photo to my son in law to see if he can do anything with it (he's more computer literate than me !) ,if he manages to better the photo ,I'll post it again ,if that's ok .Is it worth asking George what he meant by " not quite right " ?

HI davesmum,
My comment is based on experience - why he is not wearing a '42 web belt but is wearing his respirator presumably with 'battle bowler' strapped to it in the 'walking out' mode - I just cannot explain it more than that, will have another think about it and come back to you again.
George.

Right we are then,
Without wishing to offend anybody the phrase I was looking for came under the K.R's/ Q.R's classification of 'Being improperly dressed in that etc. not wearing his  42 pattern web belt as per section 40 sub para *** Dress Regulations'. He would never have got passed the guardroom dressed as he is, as I did say in my original comments ' Unless it was attached to his pouches and webbing as for Field-marching Order i.e. 'being in transit - moving from one unit to another etc. and that is the best and only possible reason I can see for this appearance which still begs the question 'why wear his respirator as for walking out order as that would in fact have been worn on his chest to the front of his FMO - so why have it slung for the photograph?
George ( aka Hawkeye) ;D

Hi Wendi,
Firstly my apology - I got my web belt mixed up with my BD respectively '37 and '42. That's what comes from trying to answer the phone at the same time that  I am on the PC.
My main query was based on the fact that - this is a Studio Photograph which, in principle was to show you at you best, but in my opinion it fails on that score because of the missing belt. Hence my 'Why'. Let's face it the BD of that issue was not the ideal item to get creases in the trousers because of the location of the map-pocket ( left leg), it  was designed for combat not 'parade ground smartness'- that pocket  jutted almost two inches across the crease  area and because of the three thicknesses of serge with the flap it was impossible to press down and retain the crease. The later types reduced the size of that pocket and moved it further back whch was much better. However that still doesn't resolve my query and the chances are that we will never get an answer.
By the way there is another possibility for the cap badge - The Cheshire Regiment.
I am not being facetious by the way - it was something which to me 'jarred' and  was very obvious.

Cheers ,
George.

Thanks George and Wendi ,I don't know anything at all about the uniform ,so I don't know what's missing from it anyway .Was it common at the time to have a photo like that taken ,albeit if he wasn't dressed correctly ?

davesmum . :)
