« on: March 01, 2009, 03:37:09 PM »
Hiya

I have been guided to this site by a friend who found in very helpful. I am undertaking a reseach project about an area called Kay's House/Little Westwood Ince Wigan and trying to trace the families that lived there. My family are the Kearsley's brothers

David Millington 1873 born at Kay’s move to Fredrick Street - no information
John KEARSLEY (1879) born at No. 34 Kay's, live at No.18 moved to Leigh street aft 1901 -  I believe he was killed in action
William KEARSLEY (1878) Born at No.34 lived here in 1911 and join up at this address - have some records
James KEARSLEY (1880) Born at No 34 and lived here in 1911 and join up at this address- My great grandfather, he was killed in France aug 1916 I have a medal roll card from the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment

Searching this part of family history is very new to me and I would be grateful if anyone can give me any information or point me in the right direction. Cheers

Im sure you get told this all the time, but you are a wonderful person. Thanks for all this information! I think? the William Kearsley could be a mistake as he is on the 1911 census in the family home 34 or as these houses were one house, shared by two family front and back, the family could have took over the front as well as the back part, I will need to do some more digging. I will update my records on the other family at the weekend, but please if you find any more from Kays or the Kearsley/Halliwell/Green name let me know. You can email me direct if it is easier, if not Il keep watching this space :) mmburns.tutor@yahoo.co.uk Cheers

The address for the area on a 1927 map is Westwood Cottages! The postal address is Little Westwood, but the family who owned the land and built the houses in the 1850's were called Kay, they lived in Westwood Hall, the houses stayed with this family until there were demoblished in the 1980's, so has always been known locally as Kay's Houses.

My Grandfather's birth cert states Kay's Houses in 1908, but Little Westwood on his marriage cert in 1926, so I guess its proper name came into use during the War, it is listed as Kay's Houses on the 1911 cencus.

Ps Yes these are my kin, so thank you for looking them up, being very poor  :( i rarely buy original documents and rely on census and internet site like this to update the time between the two wars, so not only have you saved me money, you have comfirmed two more children born after 1911, so double thank you  ;) ;)
