Hi,
I have just found out that my Grandad William Lowe 5390 served with the 1st manchesters for 10 years. 1897 - 1907. I have downloaded his service history from ancestry. Can anyone explain to me what WTDILWARA 21.Feb.98 means?
and although I have put the Battalion History book on my xmas list, inbetween times, can anybody tell me why the 1st batt was in Gibraltar 15.Mar.1898?
One final question, he was with the Manchesters for 10 years then transferred to the Bedford Regt, does anyone know why this would have happened?

.......there was a Troop Ship called the "Dilwara" .......

But it does say "WT"Dilwara so what does the WT stand for

Yes.. see what you mean with the medical history, got excited about finding his records and only realised when I had posted it ..... Does it mean that all the stamped entrys are ships? ie Gibraltar is a ship too? Thank you for the online library tip.

Karen.
The 1st Battalion sailed to Gibralter on the Nubia on 17th November 1897. Your Grandfather enlisted at the Depot in Ashton-under-Lyne in October 1897 but missed going out with the battalion because of his sickness. After recovery he sailed to Gibralter to join the battalion on 21st February 1898 aboard the war transport Dilwara.

Gibralter was not a ship - just the location of the battalion.

With the approach of war in South Africa the battalion embarked on the Union Liner Goth on 23rd August 1899 and arrived at Durban on 20th September 1899. Then on into the war, which he survived.

Hi everybody,
Thank you so much for your replies. I've googled "Gibraltar 1897" but can't find any specific references to the manchester reg other than they were there. Does anybody know why they were there? I've ordered the regimental history (xmas prezzie from the kids) but just can't wait, I gotta ask the question.
