8th Manchesters....John Oldham
« on: November 08, 2008, 08:55:11 AM »
My uncle, John Oldham, lost arm in Italy when with 8th Manchesters (or the 8th Ardwicks, as my dad called them). Can anyone advise possible time period/location when the lads were in action in Italy?

Many Thanks

On 4th April 1944 the advance party of the 8th (Ardwick) Bn moved from Taranto to Foggia. They were a part of 10th Indian Division. They fought their way up through the Cental Appennines and on to the Gothic Line. They returned to England on 23rd October 1944 due to being reduced to skeleton strength by a combination of casualties and the repatriation of long serving overseas servicemen. The battalion had served overseas since April 1940.
