2/Lt Ernest Henry Walters kia 26/09/1916
« on: April 05, 2021, 04:12:25 PM »
2/Lt Walters is commememorated on the Loos Memorial as a subaltern with 10th Bttn.  The Bttn wasn't in France and I'm trying to establish which Bttn he was attached to.  11th Bttn suffered huge losses on this date, but he's not mentioned in their War Diary.

Any ideas?

Tim,
Mitchinson‘s „Amateur Soldiers“ records in the Roll of Honour - „Possibly attached to Lancashire Fusiliers and erroneously inscribed on Loos MM rather than Thiepval MM.“

That's great Charlie,
9th Lancs Fusils lost 125 men on the Somme on 26/09/1916, including most officers and none of their other Bttns had casualties.  Sadly the War Diary doesn't mention the officer casualty list, so we can't verify if Walters was there.
Tim
ps 34 Bgd War Diary doesn't name the officers either and I can't find any reference to 2/Lt Walters in earlier sections of either diary.
pps The Newcastle Journal of 05/10/1916 states 2/Lt Walters was attd to OBLI. I'll report back...
pps 6th OBLI was their only Bttn with losses on 26/09/1916.  No names in Bttn or Bgd War Diary.

Amateur Soldiers is now 22 years old, a lot of information has become (and a lot easier to find) available since then.
